FOCUS (FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification)
An open technical specification that standardizes technology billing, cost, usage, pricing, commitment, and invoice data across providers, enabling more consistent analysis, integration, reporting, and decision support.
Technology providers have historically described billing, cost, usage, pricing, credits, commitments, and adjustments through different terminology, data structures, and calculation methods. This fragmentation increases the cost and complexity of producing consistent reporting across cloud services, software, data platforms, artificial intelligence, infrastructure, and other technology categories.
The FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification, known as FOCUS, establishes a common language and technical structure for technology billing data. Supported by the FinOps Foundation and developed through a neutral, industry-supported specification project, FOCUS enables providers, platforms, practitioners, and customers to exchange and analyze technology economic data with greater consistency.
